Clarets break 0-0 record with underwhelming Pompey display
Portsmouth reaction, transfer window latest plus Debrief podcast
Hello and welcome to the second edition of the From The Bee Hole End newsletter.
The Clarets extended their clean sheet record with ANOTHER 0-0 draw with Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday and we’ve got all the reaction from that game below.
Plus, the latest on the transfer front as we count down to the window slamming shut tonight and, of course, the latest podcast is also available!
Up the Clarets!
Burnley boss Scott Parker and goalkeeper James Trafford have both reacted to the Clarets’ 0-0 draw with Portsmouth. Here’s what they had to say…
Scott Parker
“It’s a difficult place to come. I think you’ve seen that with their results over the last few weeks, Middlesbrough come here and lose 2-1, they beat Stoke 3-1, Coventry 4-1.
“You probably could see it the way they play. They're a different animal at home. You're under pressure constantly in terms of a real intent in the way they play and we had to stand up to that.
“I think that's the one positive really, because this game could have looked a lot different if we didn't have that resilience of ours. On the flip side, I think it's fair to say we weren’t at our best today. We just lacked a little something.
"At the time I thought it was a clear penalty, obviously I'm 50 yards away, but at the time the dynamics of the positioning looked like it was a clear penalty and I was looking at it back.
"So yes, the referee's not seen it or the fourth official or the linesman today, which is disappointing, but it's one of those things."
James Trafford
“It was tough. They are alright here so it was a tough game. The pitch is very tight. There were chances in the game for both teams, but I thought we should have had a penalty, I don’t understand why it hasn’t been given as handball. However, it is what it is the referee didn’t give it, and the linos didn’t see it.
“If that’s a penalty we win 1-0 but we could have scored more but so could they. It was a tight game.
“The save I made, we gave the ball away in a really poor area and there was a big overload in the box. I knew I had to effect it one way or another, I would have liked to have got it further away. But then your man ran onto it, I thought I’m just going to take his foot off here and try and save it. That’s what I did so yes, I played a part.”

James Trafford - 8 (MOM)
Superb double save near the end earned the Clarets a point. Broke club record for longest time without conceding.
Connor Roberts - 5
Perhaps a little lucky not to get a second yellow. A bit sloppy in and out of possession.
CJ Egan-Riley - 6
Not as sharp with some of his passing but defended well enough which is the job he’s paid to do.
Maxime Esteve - 6
Similar to his defensive partner - not the best game you’ll see from Steeeeeeeeeeeve but did OK.
Lucas Pires - 4
Not sure he offers more than Bashir Humphreys in an attacking sense, which appears to be the reason he got in ahead of the Chelsea loanee. Wasteful on too many occasions.
Jaidon Anthony - 6
A couple of efforts that were easy for the Pompey keeper. Stifled a little bit in an attacking sense.
Josh Cullen - 6
Battled hard but little chance to stamp his authority on the game. Limited options ahead of him.
Josh Laurent - 5
Similar to Monday night against Leeds, tried hard but found little success. Again, another who was sloppy.
Lyle Foster - 5
Really not sure the ‘Foster out wide’ experiment is working. Looks to have plenty of intent but clearly out of position.
Jeremy Sarmiento - 4
Clearly a talent but shows it only in (very brief) flashes. A frustrating afternoon for the Brighton loan man.
Zian Flemming - 5
Works hard but nothing much came off for him. Lack of service made him ineffective for large parts of the game.

Hannibal - 6
Has plenty of energy and did try to drive things forward. Would expect him to return to the side midweek on this showing.
Ashley Barnes - N/A
Not on long enough.
The January transfer window will close at 11pm tonight and it’s fair to say that at the back end of last week we were expecting a quiet few days.
But the departure of Jay Rodriguez to Wrexham means that might now not be the case.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says the Clarets are set to sign Sporting’s Marcus Edwards on loan with an obligation to buy.
Edwards will be well-know to Clarets boss Scott Parker having worked with him at the Spurs academy earlier in his career.
The winger has had a bit of a stop-start season with injury but it isn’t too long ago that he was being tipped for an England call-up and had a £30m price tag on his head.
Here’s a handy video of what he’s capable of…
There’s also been a link to Chelsea striker Marc Guiu, formerly of Barcelona no less.
Reports suggest that Burnley are among a host of Championship clubs lining up to secure his services, should Chelsea seek to send him out for game time.
Guiu has had a real impact in the Europa Conference League this season for the Blues, scoring a hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers.
We’re also told that there’s one or two other ‘irons in the fire’ with the club looking to ramp up its pursuit of some attacking reinforcements in the final hours of the window.
